The profound influence of the writings of feminist, lesbian, and Chicana writers Cherrie Moraga and Gloria Anzaldúa on my view of identity—and, consequently, on my artistic expression—has inspired me to create a piece that draws on a quote that encapsulates what I consider to be the essence of their work. Using quilting, a technique with a rich history of domestic artistic expression employed by women for centuries, I scanned, traced, cut out, and hand-sewed the letters of this phrase onto a cotton fabric dyed with cochineal. Through the candor and simplicity of the quilt, the meaning of its text, and the contrast of colors in the fabrics this piece aims to delve deeper into and reclaim the essence of this idea that I repeat to myself as a border manifesto in a world that demands strict adherence to a binary system.
